From the Principal's Desk
Dear Members of St Joseph’s Family,
As we come to the end of Term 1, we approach the most important time in our Christian calendar, the death and resurrection of Jesus. Easter is a reminder to us that there is hope after hardship. On Good Friday, Jesus was betrayed, trialled, beaten, rejected, and hung to die on a cross. His followers were confused, afraid and … hopeless. But on Sunday, a path to hope was revealed. Jesus rose back to life. His victory over death – and all the pain and hurt He experienced – gives us hope for our lives. Jesus offers to help us in our times of trouble, He gives us purpose for lives today, and a promise for the future. We believe we can all find a path to hope – one we can hold on to, to help us through any situation we may face.
This Easter, our prayer is that you find hope.
Staffing
Today we say farewell to three staff members. Mr Rosendo Angeles is looking after his health and retiring and Ms Arabella Adeline is relocating to a school much closer to her home. We wish them both all the best for the future.
Mr Steve Johnson has been our amazing Business Manager for the last fifteen years. Steve has worked financial magic, and this has allowed the School's financial position to grow over the years. This growth has allowed us to fund the building programs on both campuses, significantly increase staffing, ensure that our facilities are well maintained and develop a contemporary school of which we are proud. I cannot emphasize enough how significant Steve has been in St Joseph's becoming the school of choice in the Avon Valley.
As Steve's family moves into the next phase of their lives and Steve moves to Perth for work, I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the entire school community, to say thank you for his service and wish him all the best for his new position. Steve, St John Bosco College is very lucky to be getting you.
Mrs Michelle Johnson will continue in her role as School Chaplaincy worker while their son Matthew finishes his schooling at St Joseph’s.
The Primary students farewelled Steve with a beautiful Irish Blessing song this morning.
Term 2
Monday 25 April - Public Holiday - ANZAC DAY
Tuesday 26 April - Term 2 begins
Winter Uniform for all students must be worn from day one of next term. Please ensure that the shoes are correct school shoes, that hair is appropriate for school and that all holiday jewellery has been removed. If you are unsure about the uniform requirements, please see the School website for the School Uniform and Student Presentation Guidelines.
Condolences
On behalf of St Joseph’s School community, we would like to extend our most sincere condolences to the O’Driscoll family on the passing of their beloved mother and grandmother, Yvette Wooltorton (Mrs Woolley). May she rest in peace after a long battle with illness.
I would like to wish you all a wonderful Easter break. Enjoy your family time and we look forward to seeing you safely back next term.
God Bless

Faith in Action
A legacy built on faith and courage
This week marks 150 years of Marist Education in Australia. A time not only for gratitude and celebration as we reflect on this significant legacy, but also a time for planning how Marists can continue building a hope filled future for Catholic education in Australia. 150 years is a long time. Let’s look at our Marist history.
In 1872, four young Brothers, Ludovic (French), Peter (Irish), Jarlath (Irish) and Augustine (Scottish), stepped off the boat in Sydney at Circular Quay, with the specific goal of establishing the first Marist school at “The Rocks”. The school opened on 8 April 1872 and the rest, as they say, is history.
The legacy left by these groundbreaking Marists is very significant. It is a legacy on which a whole network of schools has been built, which of course includes our wonderful St Joseph's School Northam.
As we continue to chart our course through very challenging times, where our faith and courage have never been more important, we can remember, with gratitude, the vision which began the Marist mission to Australia and the faith and courage of the people who made the vision a reality in their own very challenging times. It’s now over to us to reimagine the Marist mission of making Jesus Christ known and loved, in the way of Mary, into the future.
Project Compassion – Lenten Appeal
I would like to thank our students and families for the amazing support of the Lenten Project Compassion appeal held during Lent. It is humbling to witness the generosity of our community in supporting this Appeal which provides support to so many disadvantaged people. The total amount of our fundraising efforts will be published next term.

Primary News
It is hard to believe that we have already reached the end of Term One. A huge thank you to our Primary staff and students for adapting to the changes we have had to put into place this term. I feel incredibly blessed to work with such an amazing group of people.
de Vialar Day
On Wednesday 30 March, we celebrated de Vialar day across both campuses. Our school was a sea of yellow and our students enjoyed participating in the lunchtime activities and eating the delicious yellow treats created by Mrs Sandrini and her team of helpers. Thank you to our Year 6 de Vialar students for your impressive leadership in organising the day. Altogether our campus raised $770.55 for Project Compassion.
Easter Raffle
Today we drew approximately 200 winners in the P&F Easter Raffle draw. Thank you to everyone who donated Easter treats, the Year 6 student leaders for selling the raffle tickets and our amazing P&F volunteers who worked tirelessly to sort out the prizes for our students.
May you all have a safe, healthy and happy Easter holiday with your families.

Class in Focus: Year 1 Blue
Wow! It’s hard to believe that Term 1 is already coming to a close. The amount of brilliant work achieved by Year 1 Blue in just 10 weeks is truly impressive.
In Literacy the Year 1s have been working hard on their spelling words and have enjoyed using our class ‘phonic phones’ to support their sounding out. During Talk for Writing the children have been busy researching and writing their own information reports about wild creatures.
Tying into our Information Reports, the children planned and constructed their own habitat dioramas for their focus animal. The children did an amazing job in building their dioramas and it was a great opportunity for them to allow their creativity and knowledge of animals to shine.
In Mathematics we loved using our brand-new maths pencil cases. The Year 1s have been learning about counting by 2’s, addition, subtraction, and place value. The children completed some awesome rainbow 100’s chart puzzles and had a blast creating a giant number line to help us count by 2s.
We have some pretty amazing talents in Year 1 Blue, from expert ‘mud crab catchers’ to Highland dancers, all the way through to chess players. In Weeks 9 and 10 during our speaking and listening time we have been sharing and celebrating our unique talents.
How fabulous to see a class full of budding artists! In Visual Art the children conjured up their very own insects, using the different body parts of ladybirds and praying mantises. After watching a video of Eric Carle painting large sheets of paper with expressive colours and textures and then collaging creepy crawlies, we decided to have a go ourselves!
Well done Year 1 Blue on a super effort during Term 1!

Class in Focus: Year 6 Gold
And just like that Term 1 is done and dusted! We have been extremely busy in Year 6 Gold getting stuck into the curriculum and taking on all the extra responsibilities that come with being the leaders of the campus.
In English, we have enjoyed learning how to write a well-structured and resourced explanation on our favourite famous people. From Sir Donald Bradman to Stephen Curry, J. K. Rowling to Jackie Chan – we have covered a vast range of different personalities and professions in the pursuit of explaining why they are the most famous in their field.
In Mathematics, we have been investigating integers (positive and negative numbers) and learning how to add and subtract them using number lines and formulas. We have also been looking at a range of different graphs – bar graphs with categorical variables, dot plots, line graphs and pie charts.
In Religion, we have been focusing on our unit of Lent. We have explored the definition of a mystery and related this back to God and ourselves; analysed examples from the Gospel where Jesus demonstrated love, compassion and forgiveness and related this back to how we can demonstrate these qualities; defined how Jesus is Lord and; discussed The Kingdom of God.
In HASS, we have started exploring the history of Australia’s democratic Government systems and how this has contributed to our current levels of Government. To change things up, we have been making an interactive lapbook to display what we have learnt which the students have thoroughly enjoyed.
It has been a busy but great start to the year and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the year brings!

Sporting Schools Sessions – Term 1
As Term 1 comes to a close, I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in making our Sporting Schools Sessions so successful! Thank you to all the families that continue to show up, participate and have fun! You make it worth it! Thank you to all my helpers and coaches during Term 1 including Mr Watson, Mrs Adams and Mr Matthys - without you none of this would be possible! I will continue to apply for funding each term, so watch this space to find out what sports will be coming up next!

Farewell
It is with heavy hearts that we pass on the sad news that the unofficial school mascot 'Spotty/Spotto the school dog' aka Bonza passed away last week at the young age of 15 years.
Spotto was a regular visitor to the school during recess and lunch, he thoroughly enjoyed spending time with the students, hoping they would share their lunch with him.
He was a smart dog who would often be wandering around the school at the busiest times of times, this was his favourite routine – seeing his excited friends at the school.
Although some may not have had the pleasure of meeting him, there are a lot of students and staff over the years that had the pleasure of seeing, feeding and patting him.
He will be sorely missed and our thoughts go out to his family and friends who loved him dearly. RIP Spotto/Spotty the school dog!
Secondary News
Term 1 has absolutely flown by, and I have really enjoyed getting to know the staff, students and parents of St Joseph’s community. We have had a fun couple of weeks. The Rocket Launch finally got the go ahead for Ms Adeline’s Year 10 class last Tuesday. I think she may have been just a little bit more excited than the Year 10s!
The sea of yellow on de Vialar Day was fantastic. The Student Leaders put on a great feed. Thank you very much.
At lunchtime on Wednesday, our Staff v’s Student Basketball game caused some contention with a 12 All Draw (I’d just like to point out that it was umpired by students).
The Staff were annihilated by our students in the Staff v’s Student Chess match today. The Yengkopiong boys were just too good for our teachers who crumbled under the pressure.
I hope everyone was able to download their Term 1 Interim reports? If you have any problems, please email me and I will send you a copy of your child’s report.
The Parent Teacher interviews will be either online or by phone this Semester. An email with the instructions was sent out this morning but please email me if you have any problems.
Please have a safe and relaxing holiday and a holy Easter.

Learning Area in Focus: The Arts
Years 9/10 Drama
The Years 9 and 10 Drama students have been working very well this term. We have developed our miming skills and had several performances in the classroom. We are currently developing a performance of the play “The Love for Three Oranges” by Doreen Heard. Students have been rehearsing the play, creating props and signage and honing their acting skills. It is hoped we will be able to present a low-key performance at school early next term.
Visual Art
It’s been a busy term in Visual Art. Both Years 9 and 10 classes, have been focusing on the Sculpture medium, the Year 10, have completed a large wire sculpture bird of their choice while the Year 9's have produced a wire figure. Both years are currently framing their 3D black and white linear designs. I am very proud of everyone's effort to date and look forward to next term. Well done!
Design Photography
In 2022, the Year 11 class have enjoyed a weekly photography excursion, looking at old buildings, the main street and learning to use the settings of the digital SLR cameras. Student practiced playing with aperture and shutter speed for different effects as well as applying the ‘rule of thirds’, ‘leading lines’ and framing in their photos. A trip to the Old Railway Museum was a highlight where students practiced their newfound skills. In the classroom, students have been looking at a range of good images and discussing their design elements and principles as well as colour theory in photos and advertising.
The Year 12s have been working on individual projects. Tully is producing a Year 12 Memory Book, while other students are preparing to make a design image on the theme of ‘Twisted Fairytales’ as well as getting ready for the Externally Set Task next term. We look forward for some ‘photo shoot’ studio work next term.
Music
Music, as an elective subject, is new for Year 9’s and 10’s this year and has been well received by the students. They have been making their own “cup song” performances, singing up a storm and simply appreciating music.
This week saw our end of term group singing performance task – it’s been great to see the students’ confidence grow and feel more comfortable with expressing themselves in front of their peers.

Learning Area in Action: Science
Science Assessment Activities
The Year 8 students have been studying cells, organs and systems this term. One of the assessments was to construct a 3D model of a cell. The results were extraordinary, ranging from foam block models, Plasticine models to very decorative cakes (My Eukaryotic Cell Rules). One even included a whole chocolate orange as a nucleus, very creative!
The cakes were shared out during lunch time, and I am grateful that I was not the teacher who had to cope with the afternoon sugar rush!
The Year 9 students have been working on the Dynamic Earth unit, looking at volcanoes and earthquakes. As part of an assessment, they were asked to construct an earthquake proof building, which was three storeys high. This was tested on a vibrating plate, which approximated the Richter scale for earthquakes. The results were excellent, some constructions included shock absorbing foundations, cables to support the top structures. Some even had pendulums, to transfer the shock waves into pendulum movements. Most survived, some collapsed, some fell into crevasses and one notable one vibrated and shook so badly that it looked as if it would fail spectacularly, however it made it to the end!
Some tremendously innovative science and engineering solutions in action.
Annual Rocket Launch
The Year 10A students have been assembling and personalising their rockets for the annual rocket launch the last few weeks. After two reschedules, they were eager to attend their rocket launch. The day started with several failures to launch by each group and our nerves grew anxious. The anticipation almost got too much, and we were surprised and ecstatic by our first successful launch. Following this, the morning went smoothly, and most groups had two to three successful launches.
Students will now use the data they recorded on the day to calculate their rockets velocity, acceleration, displacement, g force, kinetic and potential energy. We would like to thank Mr & Mrs Fox, the property owners of Burlong Farm, for once again allowing this tremendous annual science practical activity occurring on site. Also, thank you to our laboratory technician, Mrs Budas, for all the background preparation and checks that enabled the day to run smoothly and safely.

Term One Curriculum News
Well, that’s one term down. A lot of busyness, a few challenges, and a bit of learning. The busyness seems to be the modern world, for the challenges we have improvised, overcome, and adapted and done so very well, even thrived, let’s take a moment to look at the learning.
There has been a lot of content and skills developed during this term, even though in some cases this cannot be forgotten, especially for those that are continuing the topic or leading into examinations next term. This is especially relevant for our senior secondary ATAR students.
Students, please enjoy a break, take some time for rest and recreation, but for our ATAR students, please also spend some time on re-connecting with your courses. Having a two week break away from all this knowledge you have acquired is not going to go well when you are trying to consolidate a semester’s worth of learning prior to examinations.
Please take care of yourselves, this includes a paced and consistent approach to learning. By spending a couple of hours on each of your courses over the two-week break, you will find a reduced level of anxiety at examination time and your performance will flourish accordingly.
Speaking of all things examinations, Years 11 and 12 students, please refer to the letter you have been provided with that outlines each day, with each course listed on one of the days between 27 May to 9 June, with some students completing ViSN courses involved in examinations commencing 23 May.
Year 12 ATAR students are reminded about the additional opportunities that staff have provided, with after school tutorials being provided for all these courses - once again refer to the letter you have received and look out for updates in the first week back. It is in your best interests to utilise all the opportunities that are provided to you.
Other opportunities for students to consider, especially if they are considering a tertiary pathway are open days and special events being held at universities, some upcoming events for students and families to consider are the Open day for Curtin University on 1 May, Edith Cowan University (Joondalup) Open Day on 31 July and the Edith Cowan University (Mt. Lawley) Open Day on 14 August. With the easing of restrictions, these are all on campus face-to-face events, which means an excellent opportunity to check out the vibe of the institution, the people, the courses, the buildings and the social activities.

Canteen News
Canteen Support - Volunteers Required
This year, a new Canteen intiative is to offer families the easy 'birthday treat' for your child's class. Available is a choice of a birthday bucket of icy poles (value is $30) or a bucket of lollypops (value is $20). Each bucket contains a birthday badge, two balloons for the birthday child and enough icy poles or lollypops for the children in that particular classroom. These birthday treats should be ordered at least two days in advance and can be ordered through the online shop. (Please note that the bucket will need to be returned to Canteen and is not included in the price)
The Canteen is operate with the Winter Menu from Tuesday 26 April and you are encouraged to check out the daily menu options before ordering lunches. If we experience connectivity issues with the online ordering, please revert to using lunch bags to place orders for that day.
Recess or snack items ordered online are available for students to collect from the Canteen at their Recess break. Milo pops and icypoles can be collected from the Canteen following the second lunch bell.
As our school grows so does the number of lunches that we supply daily. Due to high demand on our quality food and service we need helpers to ensure that our kids get their lunches on time. In order to function to our highest potential, we ideally need 2 or more volunteers a day. Volunteering is a great way to teach your kids about giving, modelling them for the future. Also, every shift you do at our School helps you towards qualifying for a Parent Participation discount on your annual fees. We would love to welcome you into our fun, and busy environment and see the smiles on your children’s faces when they see you in their school. This year is a busy year and we would love to have some new faces in our canteen.
