From the Principal's Desk
Dear Members of St Joseph’s Family,
As we come to the end of a very long term, it is time to say farewell to some staff who are moving on. Mrs Nadia Golding and Ms Shari Van Wellie are both leaving to start their maternity leave. We wish both ladies every blessing as they soon welcome their beautiful babies into the world. Mrs Montana Bogoni is moving onto a school much closer to her home and Mr Niall Oman is leaving to move into another field of work. All four staff members have bought much to our community over the years and while we will miss them, we wish them best of luck in all they undertake.
Semester Reports
I have had the pleasure of reading the Semester One reports this week. While the academic achievement of the students is impressive, it is the comments by teachers that highlight the effort, work ethic and personal qualities of each child that are most remarkable. I am certain that there were some very proud parents when the reports were read after being released on SEQTA Engage on Wednesday afternoon.
NAIDOC Celebrations
As NAIDOC Week falls in the holidays, St Joseph’s will be celebrating on the first Friday of Term 3. Both campuses will come together on the Primary Campus in the afternoon to take part in a rotation of activities.
Parent/Teacher Interviews
An email was sent to parents earlier this week with instructions for booking parent/teacher interviews. Each campus is using a different booking system so it is important that the directions are followed. The booking details for both Primary and Secondary interviews are printed in the relevant Campus section of this newsletter and can also be found under Class Information on our website. Secondary interviews will be held on Thursday 22 July and Primary interviews are being held over two Thursdays - 22 and 29 July.
Netball Carnival
Congratulations to all those who competed at the Netball Carnival in Merredin last week. All reports that were fed back to us were very positive and we were very proud of the sportsmanship displayed by our students.
School Advisory Council
Dr Harry Randhawa and his family are leaving Northam and relocating to South Australia. Harry has been a member of the School Advisory Council for the last four and a half years and stepped into the role of Chairperson last year. We are most grateful for the wisdom and expertise Harry bought to the Council. We wish he and his family the very best as they begin their adventures interstate.
Mr Andrew O’Sullivan has taken on the role of Chairperson until the end of this year.
Congratulations
Earlier this term our Year 8 student, Joshua Patrick, was invited to spend the day at the Telethon Kids Institute with scientists who are processing and interpreting genome sequencing results of children with undiagnosed diseases like his sister, Charlotte. This was a great honour for Joshua and he proudly wore his School uniform as he represented St Joseph’s School. You can read more about Joshua’s incredible day further in the newsletter.
Enjoy your holiday break and we look forward to seeing our students return on Monday 19 July.
God Bless

Primary News
Dear families and friends, I can not believe that we have reached the end of Semester One! It has been a semester full of ups and downs and through everything, the greatest joy has been getting to know the beautiful children in our community.
Below are some important things for parents and caregivers to know going into Term 3.
Friday Assemblies
With winter now upon us, the mornings in Northam are incredibly cold. As a result, we have made the decision to move our Friday Assemblies to 2:15pm for Term 3.
Curriculum Overviews
Beginning Term 3, classroom teachers will be sending home to families (through See-Saw) an overview of the teaching and learning that is happening in their classroom. The purpose of this overview is to strengthen the bond between home and school and to give parents an insight into what their child is focusing on in class. The overviews will be sent out every five weeks, beginning on Wednesday 21 July.
Parent-Teacher Interviews
Parent-Teacher Interviews for students in Kindergarten to Year 6 will be held on Thursday 22 July and Thursday 29 July from 2:45pm-6:00pm. Interviews are strictly 10 minutes duration and will be held in our Primary Performing Arts Centre.
The purpose of the interviews is to discuss your child’s progress up to this point, goals for Semester Two and an opportunity to discuss any celebrations, concerns, or questions you may have. For families with children in Year 3 Blue, Year 4 Blue and Year 5 Gold, these interviews will provide you with an opportunity to meet your child’s new teacher and share information with them about your child.

Tree Planting
Yesterday, our Year 6 students participated in a tree planting excursion on a property in Northam. Students had the opportunity to develop their understanding of revegetation and salinity issues in our local area and thoroughly enjoyed getting dirty, planting trees and connecting with nature. Thank you to Jo & Ben Smith for providing this rich learning experience for our students.
May you all have a healthy and happy holiday period with your children.

Class in Focus: Year 2 Gold
Year 2 have been studying life in the ‘olden days’. After investigating different types of old-fashioned toys, we designed and created toys of the future. Many of us took inspiration from classic toys like yoyos and teddies. Next, we wrote advertisements and created brochures informing others about our future toys. In Week 9, Year 2 created a Toy Museum with the future toys and invited our families into the classroom to see our wonderful creations. We had so many people visit our museum and we loved showing them all the work that we have been doing.
Our next project was looking towards the future. Year 2 have been dreaming about what classrooms would look like in years to come. Our designs include hover desks, teachers with lots of eyes so they can keep an eye on every student and giant televisions. We created our future classrooms on grid paper from a ‘birds eye view’ perspective and thought about the area of different objects when planning its layout. Year 2 wished they had their hover desks now.
We are looking forward to what next term will bring. Year 2 hopes that everyone has a happy and safe holiday!

Class in Focus: Year 3 Gold
Term 2 has been a busy term for Year 3 Gold!
Through Design and Technologies, we researched, designed, produced and evaluated our Pet Toy. The ideas that were discussed were very interesting and allowed the children to develop their own version of a Pet Toy. Their brief was:
At a local shelter there are lots of dogs and cats waiting to find their forever home and family. Right now, they are lonely and don’t have any toys to play with. Can you design and make a toy, so they have some toys at the shelter? Here are some pictures of the children’s finished product:
Our class has some very artistic and imaginative minds. As part of our visual art program, we designed our own crazy critters. Our imagination had no limits.
Easter was a special time for us also with the class exploring the meaning of Easter. We went away from the usual chocolate and bunnies and focused on what Easter was really all about; Jesus dying on the cross. Students discussed and came up with things that they were willing to give up for Lent. Most of them thought very hard about what they would give up for 40 days. I was very proud of them as they all tried really hard and were honest about their successes and failure to keep their Lenten commitment.
With Semester 2 just around the corner, the students will have new challenges and opportunities to further develop their knowledge and skills.

Bin Stickers
Today each family received a ‘Bin Sticker’ to encourage drivers to slow down to protect our children. These stickers are to be placed on the side of your green wheelie bins to deter drivers from speeding in built up areas. Please read the following information from the Road Wise website about this wonderful initiative - https://www.roadwise.asn.au/bin-stickers.aspx
Containers for Change
At the Week 9 Assembly, we welcomed Carolyn Brown from ‘Avonvalley Cash 4 Containers’. She came to talk to us about
our bright new Containers for Change bins, which were generously donated by her son, Lleyton, an ex-St Joseph’s student.
We learnt about what types of containers were suitable to place in the bins, such as;
plastic water bottles – with the lid off. The plastic lid can go into the bin too.
juice boxes - the straw needs to go into the general waste bin.
milk cartons.
Please remember that the containers need to be empty before they go into the bins.
If you would like to contribute to St Joseph’s School collections for Containers for Change, you can either bring your containers
in to School and put them into our bins or take them directly to Avonvalley Cash 4 Containers* and donate to the St Joseph’s School Account (c10440200).
A final thank you to Rebecca Potocznyj and the Year 6 student leaders for leading this initiative.

Secondary News
Secondary Parent/Teacher Interviews
Interviews for Secondary students will be held on Thursday 22 July from 2:50pm-6:00pm. Interview slots will be 15 minutes in length and will be held in the new classroom block on Duke Street, next to the Admin building.
Interviews will be made using Edval Timetabling Solutions as it was last term. Parents were emailed an invitation to attend these following the release of our Semester One reports on SEQTA Engage. On the invitation is a web address as well as a student code. These are needed to log in. You will then be able to choose the teachers you wish to see in the preferential order you wish to see them.
At 3.00pm on Tuesday 21 July the booking window will close. The Edval system will then generate the timetable that is best for most people. Parents will then be emailed their interview schedule. Please save your personalised schedule.
Years 10 & 12 Retreats
The Year 12 Nahra Retreat occurred in Week 9. Students attended the three-day Retreat at St John of God Retreat Centre in Shoalwater. The experience was both uplifting and life-giving for the retreatants and many have come home feeling a real sense of stronger relationships.
We look forward to seeing the Year 12 cohort progress through the remainder of their graduating year and wish them all the best on their journey of faith.
The Year 10's completed their Galilee Retreat on Tuesday Week 10. Students spent the day imagining that they were following in the footsteps of Christ as he journeyed around Lake Galilee. Their walk occurred around the Avon River stopping at Capernaum, Bethsaida, Tiberias and Gennesaret, and students spent time pondering their own experiences of being called and loved unconditionally by God. Students acknowledged the storms in their lives and explored ways that they could serve God by serving others.
Speak For Faith Finals
On the weekend, Year 12 student Lara Schmidt competed in the CEWA and Catenians of WA Final for 'Speak For Faith' and absolutely wowed the audience and judges.
Lara chose the topic of the role of 'work' in the Year of St Joseph. As a result of her hard work, dedication and incredible public speaking ability, Lara was announced the winner of the competition. Lara competed against 17 other students from Catholic Schools across Western Australia and is the first General RE student to win the event. She received a commemorative medal and a cash prize of $700, whilst the School received a medal acknowledging her win.
Lara has continued our great success over the years in the Catenians’ public speaking contest, Speak For Faith, as we have previously made the finals in the competition every year but one. St Joseph's Northam is now, also, the only school in WA to have won the event twice!
Congratulations, Lara!
Secondary PJ Day
Secondary students (and staff) enjoyed the opportunity to wear their pajamas to school on Thursday 1 July.
This was our term's fundraiser with students donating canned foods which will be distributed between St Joseph Care (local Parish) and Lifelink's Shop Front (in Perth). Both of these charities depend on the generosity of the community to provide to those less fortunate than us. Thank you to everyone who participated.

Curriculum Matters
Dear Secondary students,
We have come to the end of another semester, you got through it! Well, perhaps that is how some people might be viewing this - you got through it.
Look at your report, examine the good and the bad. There are the attributes, the story about you in that subject, perhaps descriptions about your organisation, behaviour, homework, or effort. These are not merely added to pad out the report, they can often tell a great story, especially if these sections contain several satisfactory, or even inconsistent or unsatisfactory descriptors. This would not be listed, simply because the teacher doesn’t like you… use these attributes as a means of self-reflection, why did you receive these, what changes can you make to your behaviour or effort that will enhance these results next semester? The required changes are up to you.
Now, on to the Grades. If you didn’t get the grade you were hoping for, reflect on why that is the case. Consider better note-taking next term, or possibly a definite study timetable, or just planning to study. Start considering what non-school commitments you have, these may be work or sport, then start building blocks of time around this, where you can complete homework, revise and study. The year is not over, there is a whole semester ahead to consolidate the foundation you have established so far. Well done to those that have established a firm foundation in preparation for Semester Two. Looking forward to everyone returning fresh and invigorated after a well-earned holiday.
Secondary da Vinci Club
Throughout second term, members of our da Vinci Club have had the opportunity to extend themselves in various academic areas. A number of students have gone in depth into coding, applying their skills to robotics, achieving a set of tasks designed by the students. Several students earlier in the term, used their coding skills to write programs to take images using one of the remote robotic telescopes of the night sky, with some tremendous success with their first imaging runs. The Astronomy rotation allowed students to create some high-quality images of a range of nebulae, globular clusters and galaxies.
More recently, several students opted to try to design a chain reaction-type machine to perform a simple task in an overly complicated way, also known as a (Rube) Goldberg machine. Students came out with some creative and convoluted devices in their quest to solve the simple!
A number of our older students involved themselves in the chemistry rotation, which included gas production, the power of gas and electrochemical reactions, extending them into senior secondary chemistry, while having a little fun with it.
When da Vinci Club returns next term, the students will be presented with a range of new and exciting rotations to challenge and spark a bit of excitement and passion for investigating and learning.
Thank you to our da Vinci team this term of Mr Hillyer, Mr Bundock and for all the organising, preparation and associated behind-the-scenes-clean up and repairs, Mrs Budas.

High Tea Experience
During Term 2, our Year 9 Food Science & Technology students undertook the ‘High Tea’ challenge in Foods. I am very pleased to report that we had outstanding results from all our groups who took great pride in preparing, cooking, and presenting their own High Tea. We all sat down to enjoy the spread in true ‘high tea’ style. Some students made profiteroles, chocolate eclairs, melting moments and much more - certainly, some impressive creations!
Well done, Year 9's.

Semester One Reward Day Student Reviews
Tier 1 Reward Day
On the Reward Day, we went to Zone Bowling in Joondalup. Everyone really enjoyed this experience. It was a day filled with joy and laughter. We played two rounds of bowling and then had half an hour of arcade games and stopped for Hungry Jacks in Mundaring on the way home. Teachers all joined in and made the day even more enjoyable for us. We’re really looking forward to the Semester Two Reward Day and hope we’re all in it again.

Reward: Zone Bowling, Laser Tag and Arcade
On Wednesday 23 June there was a group of 44 students who went to Zone Bowling Alley and Arcade in Joondalup as a reward for being in the top 50 students of the Secondary Campus in individual house points. At the bowling alley we were split up into small groups where we would be competing against each other. We played two games with the small groups that we were in, all the games were close amongst the groups. When the bowling games were completed, we were given time to play in the Arcade section of the building, in here there were multiple games of air hockey between students that were all intense. The day was well prepared and filled with joy and laughter, everyone that attended all had a great time and had a smile on their faces the whole time that we were there and on the drive home.
Ethan Budas
Tier 2 Reward Day
The Tier 2 reward day was a fun day. We had to work on various challenges around Northam. Our teams started off in the Secondary campus with small and easy challenges but throughout the day, got harder as well as more fun. The Reward Day ended up at the Northam Recreation Centre where we got to play other small games and have a pizza lunch. Overall, the day was filled with many great activities and challenges and was beneficial to our team building skills and competitiveness towards each other.
Grace & Madeleine
Tier 3 Reward Day
On Reward Day, Tier 3 students stayed at school for the day. Our group was given multiple choices throughout the day. There were movies, board games and origami. In Periods 3 and 4, we were given the option to go out on the oval which was a good break. When lunch came, every student in Group 3 received an icecream from the Canteen for free.

Visit to Telethon Kids Institute
On Friday 11 June, I was invited to visit Dr Timo Lassmann at Telethon Kids Institute (TKI), the research arm of Telethon. Dr Lassmann is the only Scientist at the Institute and in the State with the unique skill set and specialised knowledge base to work on processing and interpreting genome sequencing results of children with undiagnosed diseases like my sister, Charlotte. The incredible Dr Lassmann does this using different computer programs, which he is constantly creating and refining, and even sharing internationally with fellow geneticists, who are also at the forefront of this new and cutting-edge research.
During my visit at TKI, Dr Lassmann demonstrated the way mathematical algorithms are used in the field of genetics to ascertain how causal different gene variants are resulting in children having multiple physical and intellectual disabilities. Dr Lassmann explained that by taking blank, or stem, cells and imprinting them with a patient’s genetic material, scientists can observe how the cell behaves when programmed to be a skin cell, heart cell etc. and thus how significant the gene variation is. Results from such investigations can then be used to inform these computer program algorithms, ruling out all the variants that are of little significance and flagging the ones which may be causal.
My keen interest in Science, my appearance at last year’s Telethon ball with Basil Zempilas and the filming of ‘Charlotte’s Story’, as broadcast in last year’s televised Telethon segment and on YouTube, is how I came to be known to, and involved with, the Telethon Kids Institute. Staff at the Institute saw me care for Charlotte and got to know me and my keen interest in Science and Mathematics. Due to my close connection to the scientists under the Undiagnosed Disease Program and some leading researchers in the field of Autism, who are so tirelessly working on finding a diagnosis and refining treatment and therapies for Charlotte and patients like her, the staff arranged for me to watch these brilliant minds at work behind the scenes, ask questions and learn about the scientific intricacies of finding a diagnosis for and improving outcomes for children like Charlotte.
I learned that there are between 20,000 and 25,000 human genes to ‘map’. Technology capable of facilitating gene-level variations only emerged in the last 20 years. This, and the tens of thousands of possible genetic deviations (many of which are related to insignificant physical differences which make us each physically unique) is the reason the research involved in identifying the cause of Charlotte’s, and other patients’, medical and physical anomalies is so slow, painstaking, yet ground-breaking and exciting.
I am extremely grateful to have witnessed the scientists working tirelessly to make a difference for the countless sick/undiagnosed children like my sister and to be shown how complex, technical, and time-consuming it is to research, learn/adapt and work towards improving the outcomes and quality of life for these special young people. I feel so honoured to see and experience the incredible work being carried out by Telethon Kids Institute and hope to continue to be given the opportunity to work alongside these great minds. It would be amazing to be a part of the team of scientists which one day identifies the fault in my sister’s genetic makeup that has caused her multiple medical problems, as well as those of other patients!

Our P&F
Term 2 Wrap-up
We are very excited to finally allocate funds raised by all the students and families over the last two years to the latest projects getting underway at the school. Congratulations to everyone who has donated in some way towards these and once the projects are finished, our students will certainly enjoy the benefits. We decided to contribute $10 000 to the Secondary Library re-vamp and $25 000 to the Primary Nature Play space. This is a remarkable amount of money and we look forward to seeing the end results in the near future.
Next term, the annual Book Fair will be held alongside Book Week in Week 6. We have a very enthusiastic group of parents putting together the theme and set up, and as always, we will call upon assistance during opening times. Stay tuned for updates for the roster.
Our next meeting will be held on Thursday 5 August at 6.45pm at The Duke's Inn and we welcome all families to come along and be part of the conversation.
