We ask you to bless St Joseph's School Community.
We pray that you guide us to be just and to see,
listen, speak and act like St Joseph.

St Joseph Pray for us
And we always remember to pray for one another.

From the Principal's Desk
Dear Members of St Joseph’s Family,
As we arrive at the end of what has been a very busy term, it is time to take a break and recharge, ready for all the excitement of Term 2.
I would like to thank the P&F for all the work that they have put into this term – they have cooked thousands of sausages, welcomed many new families at various morning teas and most importantly, have provided the opportunity for our students to have a sensational afternoon at the Colour Run. The fundraising tally from the Colour Run stands at $17,800+. What a magnificent effort from our School community! The winning Primary class is Year 4 Gold and the winning Secondary Homeroom is de Vialar 3. Both of these classes will receive a pizza lunch next term and a pool and slides voucher.
NSSA Carnival
Congratulations to all those who represented the School at the last ever NSSA Swimming Carnival. St Joseph’s students not only showed their strong swimming skills but also their exemplary sportsmanship. Unfortunately, due to other schools struggling to be able to create a team for the last few years, it has been decided that a different carnival will be run in Term 4 which is more inclusive and allows more students the opportunity to participate. We will be entering our Interschool swimming students in a competition with similar sized schools in Perth.
50th Anniversary Celebrations
On Friday 30 April, staff, students and invited guests are gathering for the official Opening and Blessing of our new buildings as well commemorating the 50th anniversary of the two Northam Catholic schools amalgamating. Whilst we don’t have the room for parents to attend the daytime events, both campuses will be open after school. The Secondary campus will have memorabilia displays and the buildings and grounds will be open to tour and on the Primary campus, the classrooms will have displays of the students’ work for Term 1. Fermoy House (Admin) will also be open to tour. If you know of past students who may be interested in seeing the changes at the School, please feel free to spread the word.
da Vinci Competitions
Congratulations to those students on both campuses who this week have taken part
in the statewide da Vinci competitions. Particular mention to the Year 8 team who won the creative writing section. This is a very competitive competition where our teams compete against some of the very big Perth schools, so it is a huge accomplishment to win a section.
I would like to wish you all a very safe, happy and Holy Easter. I hope you enjoy the time with your families and get a chance to relax over the long weekend.
School resumes for Term 2 on Monday 19 April. Please note that there is a long weekend on Monday April 26 and a Pupil Free day on Friday 4 May.
God Bless

The Last Supper
On Wednesday, the Kindergarten & Pre-primary students participated in a 'Last Supper' re-enactment. The students and teachers came to school dressed as disciples. Mr Reidy led us in discussions and entertained us with his music. We celebrated the last supper by breaking bread and drinking juice. The students shared a retell of 'The First Easter' to Mr Reidy and did an amazing job!

Project Compassion: An Australian Icon
For over half a century, generations of Australians have participated in Project Compassion, making it one of the nation’s longest running charity campaigns.
For many, Project Compassion’s iconic collection boxes have become a nostalgic part of their lives since 1965 – a reminder around home, school, Church and the community that it’s time to support Caritas Australia’s annual appeal.
Margaret Moriarty can’t remember a time without a Project Compassion box in her house during Lent.
“Donating to poorer counties was very important to my mother and father. My children have grown up with the same iconic boxes in our home and my grandchildren are continuing the tradition,” Margaret says.
Throughout five decades of natural disasters, conflicts and crises, Caritas Australia has worked alongside vulnerable communities with the generous support of Australians. Project Compassion has also helped with access to education, health services, agricultural training and through programs that reduce maternal and infant mortality. During the COVID-19 pandemic, local partnerships have helped Caritas Australia to respond quickly to minimise the spread of the coronavirus.
This year, Caritas Australia has presented five stories from people striving to ‘Be More’, just a few stories amongst the millions of people who have been helped through Project Compassion.
Caritas Australia would like to thank generations of our supporters nationwide for their ongoing generosity, which allows us to move forward with lifesaving strategies to tackle new challenges.

End of Term
I cannot believe that we have reached the end of Term One, my first term of working at St Joseph’s School. It has been an absolute pleasure getting to know our students, staff and parents over this time. The spirit of St Joseph has been revealed to me in so many ways, from eating lunch with our Pre-Kindy students every Thursday and being present with them as they experience things for the first time, through to being immersed in the joy of the Colour Run. Our School is a place that nurtures the development of the whole child and I am proud to say that I belong to our St Joseph’s community.
Year 6 Camp
Last week I had the pleasure of attending our Year 6 Camp. Our students participated in a range of activities including rock climbing, extreme flying fox, beach raft building and kite making. Thank you to our Year 6 students, you represented St Joseph’s School so well through your energy and participation in all of the activities; your manners and the time you took to deepen your friendships and develop your leadership skills.
Thank you to Mrs James, Mr Hewitt and Mr Watson for attending camp and looking after our students so beautifully.
May you all have a beautiful Easter period with your families. I look forward to seeing everyone back refreshed, healthy and bright in Term Two.

Class in Focus: Kindy/Pre Primary Blue
We started off the year by inviting Father Konrad to our classroom to bless our backpacks and asked that he pray that we have a great year. This sure did help us as we have had a fantastic start to the year in Kindy/Pre-Primary Blue!
Our Kindy students have been learning all about our bodies and families during our Integrated Investigation Time. We learnt about our five senses by going on a nature walk to see what we could hear, smell, see, touch and taste and made some yummy popcorn too! In Literacy, we have worked incredibly hard to learn some sounds of the alphabet and how to write our name. In Maths, we have been practising to count to ten by singing some fun songs and identifying what numbers look like by learning some cool number rhymes!
Our Pre Primary students have been learning about workers in our community. In Literacy, we have been working on our letter formation. We have been practising to write these letters in coloured rice, sand and paint bags. We have even started to learn how to write these letters on lines! Fine motor skills have also been a focus for us this term. We balanced pompoms on pool noodles, traced chalk lines with a wet paint brush and squeezed coloured water into a jar using a pipette. In Maths, we have been busy practising our counting skills and learning how to write our numbers properly. We loved using whiteboards during all our mat session this term.
To finish off the term, we learnt about the Easter Story through Talk 4 Writing. We dressed up as disciples and re-enacted the Last Supper. Mr Reidy told us some more stories about Easter and sang us a song whilst we broke some bread and drank some ‘wine’.
We absolutely loved our hospital home corner set up! We enjoyed dressing up as a doctor or nurse to help some very sick patients. Our café corner was also a hit. We served lots of different treats and made a great drop of coffee for our customers!
We can’t believe how much we have achieved this term and we look forward to seeing what the rest of the year has in store for us!

NSSA Swimming Carnival
After COVID-19 cancelled last year’s event, the 2021 NSSA Swimming Carnival was held on Tuesday 30 March. It was a perfect day for competitors, with the temperature reaching 36 degrees. There were some incredibly close races, which kept the Finish Judges on their toes. Thank you to both Avonvale and Northam Primary Schools for a great event.
Medal winners for the day are as follows:
Year 4 Girls | Runner-Up: Jessica Leeson | Champion: Mackenzie Miller |
Year 4 Boys | Runner-Up: Harry Robert
Year 5 Girls | Champion: Alexie Wallis
Year 5 Boys | Champion: Parker Byfield
Year 6 Girls | Runner-Up: Madalyn Emin | Champion: Leni Turner |
Year 6 Boys | Runner-Up: Benji Park | Champion: Macauley Leask |
Well done to all our participants who represented the School with pride. A huge thank you must go to members of the Northam Swimming Club, pool staff and all the parents who assisted with timing and judging - your help is greatly appreciated.

Learning Area in Focus: Humanities & Social Sciences (HASS)
The Years 7 and 8 started this year with Geography, specifically looking at basic mapping skills. They then commenced their content studies, using their textbooks. The Year 7s have been investigating ‘Water in the World’ and the Year 8s have been working through the topic ‘Landscapes & Landforms’.
The Year 9s started their year studying History, looking at the Agricultural Revolution and how this led to the Industrial Revolution in Britain from 1750 to 1914. Students were horrified to learn of the working conditions for men, women and children during this time, but also of the inventions and innovations of this era, which helped shape modern society. The ideas of imperialism, nationalism, militarism and alliances were explored, along with colonialism and slavery, leading to the outbreak of The Great War (1914 to 1918). Students have honed their source analysis skills and will soon be working on their essay-writing skills focusing on the causes, events and impacts of World War I.
The Year 10s also started their year studying History. They continued where they left off with their Year 9 studies with the inter-war period, specifically looking at the peace agreements put in place to prevent another world war. Students then studied the Roaring 20s, The Great Depression and then the events leading up to the outbreak of World War II. The Year 10s continued to develop their source analysis skills and will end the term writing a persuasive essay on the impacts and significance of WWII on Australia and/or the world.
Year 11 ATAR Geography students started their year refining their mapping skills, learning, among other things, how to read topographic maps and ascertain gradients, calculate speed/distance/time and create cross-section sketches. Students then commenced their Hazards Geography studies, recently going on an earthquake excursion to sites around Meckering and Cunderdin, including the museum to investigate the 1968 Meckering Earthquake. How fitting that the earth shook again the day before the excursion!
The Year 12 ATAR Geography students also started their studies practicing their mapping skills and then commenced investigating environmental change with overview content on the topic of Land Cover Change. They are currently working through their first depth study focusing on linking land cover with climate change based on natural and anthropogenic causes. Students will then complete their second depth study ‘Investigating Land Cover Change & Management’.

Year 11 Photography
The Year 11 Design Photography class have had a great start to the year. Some students knew nothing about digital cameras, so it has been a steep learning curve! We began the year by looking at the Elements and Principles of Design, considering a range of images and discussing what made them appealing. Students created their own photographic glossary and began shooting their own images, around the school and on some town walks. We have been lucky to have had Professional photographer, Angie Roe, join us on several walks. She gave students the opportunity to learn about aperture and shutter speed.
Students have created a collection of images that evoke a sense of emptiness and abandonment based on the style of photographer, Johnny Joo, with some of these images displayed below. The Year 11s have also enjoyed applying their photography skills to school events such as Fun Day, School Masses and the Colour Run.
Year 9 Drama
Year 9 Drama group have worked hard this term learning about and performing fantastic mimes and a wonderful rendition of a Melodrama Play. Students have worked well together and been very creative in developing their styles and interpreting scripts.
Year 10 Drama
Year 10 Drama students have worked hard on developing our performance for this year. We have distributed roles, rehearsed our script and viewed the costumes. The performance is set to take place on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 June at the Link Theatre Northam. Students are working hard to develop their characters and the performance.
Year 12 Drama
Year 12 Students have been interpreting script and rehearsing their scenes for their small performance, “Diving for Pearls”, set to take place Week 3 next term during school hours. They have developed character, scenography and had a go at directing other groups.
Visual Art
It has been a busy Term One in Visual Art. The Year 9s have been focusing on Sculpture throughout the term and have completed their wire sculptures. They are now working on their large papier mache figure which focuses on Balance.
The Year 10s have been looking at Landscape and Post Impression. They have completed a small canvas using one colour tone and mixing many shades of that colour.

2021 da Vinci Decathlon
This week, the Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 students competed in the annual da Vinci Decathlon held in Winthrop Hall at the University of Western Australia.

The students thoroughly enjoyed their experience and competing, even though it was a very long day with a 6.45am start!
No final overall results have been received as yet, but we are pleased to announce that our Year 7 team received first place in the ‘creative producers’ task. In the 14 years of da Vinci Decathlon participation, that is the highest ranking for that task we have achieved so well done, students!
Decathlon Team members;
Year 10 - Adrian Gargano, Gubek Yengkopiong, Carmen Reynders, Hannah Morrell, Kimberlea McCall, Stephanie Irvin, Kate Gentle and Abi Parker.
Year 9 - Grace Treloar, Elara French, Antionette Matres, Madison Longmire, Maggie Halford, Leah Morrell and Swaka Yengkopiong.

The Hub
Operation Hub have been working hard to make the final preparations for the Mother’s Day stall, to be held on the Primary campus in Week 2 of Term Two. We have had a wonderful time getting the gifts organised and discussing which one is the best gift for our mums. With all gifts priced at $5, the choice is going to be hard!
Information about the stall will be sent out to our Primary students at the beginning of Term 2.

Leeuwin II Voyage 21-08
I was accepted onto the Youth Explorer Voyage which aims to build leadership and teamwork skills of young people. On 16 March, I set off on voyage 21-08, starting in Albany with fellow trainees and anchored for the night in King George Sound Cove where we were put through our paces and completed our induction. The next day, we set sail and under the watchful eye of our Captain and crew we sailed upon the magnificent Leeuwin II, Australia’s largest sail-training tall ship.
We soon found our sea legs and over the 8 days, I learnt and took part in duties such as navigating, steering, cleaning (gully and deck), watch duty (day and night), unfurling the sails, hauling and easing the ropes. While participating on the voyage we all built friendships as well as gaining leadership and communication skills. I worked as part of a team in my watch group and we were responsible for the ship’s running and maintenance. Near the end of our journey, we anchored near Rottnest and spent part of the day there exploring the island and had time on the beach. We then returned to ship before making one last sail arriving at our destination, 8 days later, in Fremantle on 23 March.
Some of my favourite things on the journey were the stars, sunrise and sets, food and company. It was also exhilarating climbing to the top of the main mast. The whole opportunity was amazing and I recommend if you ever get the chance to experience it yourself, whether that be on a short 3 hour family friendly trip or longer - it is well worth it!

St Joseph’s School Graduates - where are they now?
When I graduated from St Joseph’s School in 2017, I didn’t exactly know where I wanted to go or what I wanted to do after school. So, for the meantime, I worked my part time job at Coles, that soon became full time once school finished.
While working, I was looking at job availabilities that were around town, I knew where I wanted to be, so I knew where to aim.
When you’re younger you have the ideas of what you want to be when you grow up. For me, I remember wanting to own my own café, that was the big dream. I went over to Sydney in 2017 during the July school holidays for a three-day career focus event at the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School. It was an amazing experience to go around to all the high-end hotels around Sydney and get the run through of what you would be doing if you were to study at that school, getting to talk to those studying there and what they were studying; it was great, but as much as it was fun, and I enjoyed my time over there, it didn’t feel like it was for me. I didn’t want to move across the country and find out months or years later, that it ‘didn’t feel right’ and feel like I wasted all that time.
For a while after going over to Sydney, I still marginally thought that I wanted to be in the hospitality industry, so I kept researching. Then one day it just popped into my head – Events Management. The idea of helping someone, create their wedding, or any event personal to someone, gives me excitement. So that’s where I’m currently aiming, I’m not quite sure of which area of events, I would be leaning too just yet.
There was a traineeship going at the Shire of Northam, doing a Certificate III in Business Administration, having completed a Cert II in Business during school, it was a step closer to my goal. I applied for the position and got it. Towards the end of my traineeship, a position was advertised in the Community Services Department. I ended up getting the position and it is the one that I am still currently in. I hadn’t quite finished my traineeship, so it was transferred over to the Community Services department so I could complete it.
In the role, I am involved in marketing and media (social media, website design/maintenance etc), purchasing for our office, some projects and events, and then there’s the general correspondence for Community Services, like Grants administration.
Unfortunately, in November 2019, I was involved in a car accident on my way home from Perth. Thankfully, I wasn’t badly injured, unlike my car. I got back into driving a car soon after, although I had to start driving slowly around town to grow my confidence. I would say it was an event that that did shake me and change my view of things around me.
I am still currently working at the Shire of Northam, and hopefully getting into my study for Events Management in the near future. To say the last four years have been full of life changing events and decisions, would be an understatement.

Class of 2017
I attended St Joseph’s School from Kindergarten to Year 12. After graduating from St Joseph’s School in 2019, I completed a bridging course at Murdoch University last year to gain full university admission. This ran for a semester and I successfully passed.
I then applied for the Bachelor of Education (Secondary), majoring in Physical Education, at Murdoch University. I took the last six months off last year for a break from study, to earn some money and play sport. I am currently studying in my first year to become a Physical Education Teacher at Murdoch University, studying 3 external units and 1 unit on campus. I am also still playing a lot of sport and working the same casual jobs, when possible, to keep the money flowing.

Astrotourism WA ~ How to find South Using the Southern Cross
Astrotourism WA seeks to encourage young West Australians to take an interest in the night sky through a series of informative articles. The Fun Fact: How to Find South Using the Southern Cross is one example.
One of the easiest and well-known constellations to find in our night sky is the Southern Cross. This is the smallest of the 88 constellations and throughout autumn and winter, you can find it lying high in the southern sky. When you head outside to stargaze in the early autumn evenings, you will first notice two bright stars on a diagonal. Together, the two stars are commonly known as the ‘pointers’, because they seem to point towards the Southern Cross. The Southern Cross itself is above the pointers. It looks like a diamond lying on its side and is actually made up of five stars. Read how to find South using the Southern Cross by visiting: https://astrotourismwa.com.au/southern-cross or visit their website: www.astrotourismwa.com.au
Uniform Shop
Opening Times: Mondays - 3.15pm to 4.45pm
Thursdays - 2.45pm to 4.15pm
Can’t Get To The Shop?
The change-rooms remain out of action due to the recent flooding, which means the Shop still contains all the big boxes of stock! This restricts the number of families able to access the Uniform Shop. Families can continue to order at any time via the online shop as we are no longer accepting email orders.
Please keep in mind when ordering, that your items will (almost always!) go home Tuesday and Friday of each week, as Monday and Thursday are the days the Shop is open. When placing an order via the Online Shop, it will appear on a report the following day. For example; if you place your order on Monday, the report issues on Tuesday which means it will not be organised until Thursday and so go home on Friday.
Term 2 - Winter Uniform
The Uniform Shop will be open next Thursday 8 April during the 1st week of the holiday period for current and new families. The opening hours will be 9.00am to 12.30pm for current families. New families are encouraged to book a 15-minute timeslot from 1.15pm to 3.00pm to allow time to try on items for correct sizing. Please contact our Primary Admin Office to secure your preferred timeslot.
Uniform Shop Closed
As a result of the clearing and building that is to happen in the Uniform Shop starting in Week 2 of the holidays, the decision has been made to close the Shop to walk-in customers in Week 1 of Term Two (this will affect Monday 19 April and Thursday 22 April). Online orders will still be processed as per usual, allowing students to obtain any necessary items.
