From the Principal's Desk
Dear Members of St Joseph’s Family,
A huge thank you to those who came along last Friday to the family games afternoon. It was a great success and it was fantastic to see so many families enjoying the festivities together. A big thank you to Mrs Johnson for her organisation and to the other staff who helped on the day.
Congratulations to the Mrs Pollard and her Year 4 class for a wonderful assembly this morning. They did a magnificent job of acting out some key scenes and songs from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It left us all with a smile on our face and a craving for some chocolate.
Student Success
Congratulations to Joshua Patrick (Year 7) for his selection as one of the national recipients of the Young Carer’s Bursary for 2021. This Bursary is awarded to young people who selflessly give of themselves in the care of a family member. One of Joshua’s sisters, Charlotte, faces many challenges in her life and Joshua, since he was very young, has helped to care for her. Congratulations, Joshua, we are very proud of you!
Canteen Volunteers
Next week, an email will be sent to the school community asking parents to sign up to volunteer at the Primary and Secondary canteens for Term 4. The email will contain a link taking you to an online calendar where you can choose the dates and the timeslots that work best for you. The Primary canteen will not open on the days that we cannot get at least one volunteer.
Secondary Build
We have bricks! It was very exciting to see the brickwork commence on the new Admin building this week and by this afternoon the external walls are just about complete. Steel framing has been installed on the other buildings so I’m sure it will not be long until that starts to take shape as well.
BYOD Information Session
Parents of students in Years 2, 3 and 4 are invited to attend an information session on the BYOD (iPad) program at St Joseph’s Primary campus. This has been very successful for the last few years in Years 5 and 6 and we are looking at also introducing it for Years 3 and 4 in 2021. This session will provide you information on how a BYOD program is beneficial, the requirements and you will hear from the teachers as to how they use the devices. The session will be held on Wednesday 16 September at 6.00pm in the SMPAC.
Alarming Videos on Social Media
Many of you will have heard during the week of the horrific video doing the rounds of social media that involved the live streaming of a suicide. We were advised by CEWA’s Psychology department not to put out a statement to parents at the time. However, we have been monitoring the students and have spoken with any student we have heard about who may have seen the content. We have been in touch with parents of these students. The social media sites have been trying to remove it although some are having difficulty – Tik Tok being one of them. This is timely advice to monitor your child’s social media accounts and perhaps have a conversation with them over the weekend about it.
Have a wonderful weekend.
God bless

Parents on Primary Campus
I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that as a School we are still restricted by the State Government COVID-19 regulations regarding parents on school grounds and in the classrooms. To ensure that we adhere to these regulations, parents/guardians are to enter the school grounds no earlier than 3:00pm (or 2:25pm on Thursdays Early Close) to collect children at the end of the day. If you need to collect your child earlier, please make your way to the front Admin office and the staff will assist you. We strongly encourage you to use 'Kiss-n-Ride' or meet your child at the various entrance gates located around the school. Unfortunately, parents are still unable to enter the classrooms unless invited by the classroom teacher for a parent-teacher interview. I thank you for your cooperation and patience during this time.
iPads in The Classroom Parent Information Session
There will be an ‘iPad in the Classroom’ Parent Information Session for all parents of students in Year 2 to Year 5 about Bring Your Own Devices (BYOD) in 2021. The session will be held on Wednesday 16 September at 6:00pm in the St Marcellin Performing Arts Centre. I strongly encourage parents to attend this session to ensure they are aware of the direction that the School is taking in regards to iPads in the classrooms.
Primary Learning Journey
On the Primary campus, we will go ahead and hold our planned Primary Learning Journey on Wednesday 23 September from 3:15pm to 5.00pm. Classrooms will be on display for all families to visit and teachers will happily speak with parents about their child’s schooling. I would like to remind you about the COVID-19 restrictions with the number of adults in a classroom at one time and this will be monitored throughout the event. There will be a ‘Learning Journey Treasure Map’ to follow to encourage families to visit all classrooms and see the wonderful work students at St Joseph’s School are doing. We are all looking forward to having our families back on campus!
‘Wear Your Favourite Team’s Colours’ Day
Friday 25 September will be ‘Wear Your Favourite Team’s Colours’ Day on the Primary Campus. Last year, this was a very successful day with students coming to school dressed supporting their favourite team – AFL, basketball, dancing, gymnastics, horse riding, the list goes on! To cap off a very busy term, there will be a Staff v Year 6 Students basketball game held during the lunchtime break. Might be time for some training sessions!

Class in Focus: Year 1 Gold
Year 1 Gold have spent this term learning all about Space!
In Writing at the start of the term, we learnt a story called ‘How to Catch a Star’. We then created our own stories about how to catch a snake, a unicorn or a rocket ship! You wouldn’t believe it, but one day our teachers saw a spaceship landing on the school oval! We have spent many recesses and lunch times since looking for clues to see if there is an alien hiding somewhere in our School and there is definitely something suspicious going on... This lead us into our new writing topic - Information Reports. We have learnt an Information Report about aliens and are just starting to write our own!
In Maths we are spending this week learning about halves. We are learning that we can split an object in half (like a pizza!) or a collection in half (like a group of students!). We are using our iPads to create Popplets showing us dividing lots of things around our classroom in half.
In Geography, we have learnt about the Earth. We learnt Earth has a northern hemisphere, a southern hemisphere, an equator around the middle, a north pole and a south pole. We have made our own Earths out of paper-mache and created a Clip with the iPads to explain where all the parts are! We are now learning about seasons, including the Indigenous seasons, which we had an introduction to at our excursion in Week 6.
We have learning about how to make good choices in Religion this term. We have loved acting out ways we can making loving choices and making puppets out of natural materials to act out the story of Jesus choosing his Apostles.
It’s been a jam-packed term learning everything we can about astronauts, Earth and the other planets. We would love to share some of the facts we’ve learnt with you if you see us!

Class in Focus: Year 3 Blue
Wow, what a term it has been in Year 3 Blue! We started this term with a Masterchef theme and the first day of term was an introduction to this. We had a day filled with activities such as cake decorating and blind food tasting. It was plain to see that, although most students were happy to eat pureed apples during the taste test, they turned their noses up at roast beef and
vegetables, pureed baby food style. Yuck!
This Masterchef theme has continued throughout our Technologies and English integrated learning, where the students were tasked with having to research, plan, cook and sell an item that could be sold at a bake sale. Baking day was organised chaos, but by the end of the day we had a huge pile of dirty dishes and some delicious looking items for our sale. The day of the sale loomed, with some very excited students keen to set up and get selling. The good news is that it was a complete sell out and we managed to raise almost $215 to donate to St Joseph’s Care as a result.
With our Masterchef theme completed, the students were excited to arrive at school this week to find a mysterious package on the classroom floor and the ominous beat of some jungle drums echoing through the classroom. Jumanji had come to Year 3 Blue! The entire class were surprised to find that the Jumanji movies were actually based upon a book by the same name, which we then enjoyed listening to as a class. We look forward to all the learning that will revolve around this theme for the rest of the term.
This week we embarked on a fabulous excursion to Kings Park to take part in their ‘Child versus Wild’ program. The students learnt the skills they would need to be able to survive a night in the bush, including making a shelter from a tarpaulin and cooking damper over the campfire. We even got a quick chance to explore Naturescape before heading back to Northam.
Although the term has been full of fun, we still have our combined Year 3 Liturgy in Week 9 and Year 3 Blue Assembly to look forward to on the last day of this term. Phew! Lucky we then have some holidays to recover and get ready for Term 4!

Year 1 - Perth Hills Discovery Centre Excursion
On Monday 24 August, the Year One students travelled to Mundaring to visit the Perth Hills Discovery Centre. Students participated in several activities throughout the day that were designed to foster awareness, appreciation and understanding of the natural environment and traditional Aboriginal culture.
The day was split into two sessions. One session saw students making necklaces out of gumnuts and string; creating a class mural using the students’ handprints; and having their faces painted in indigenous symbols to reflect specific animals.
The second session saw students become hunters and gatherers of the land. Students learnt a lot of Indigenous vocabulary throughout the day. They were also given gidjies (spears) to throw and practised searching for food in the forest.
The students had a fantastic excursion and learnt new knowledge and many new skills that they can take back to the classroom.

Learning Area in Focus: Mathematics
Year 7
The Year 7’s started off the term with ‘Collecting and Classifying Data’. Students had to survey students in other classes and collect data of their choice. Some chose favourite sports, food, hobbies and many more. The students then transferred these results into graphs in order to interpret them.
For the last few weeks, the Year 7’s have been learning about decimals. They were able to convert simple decimals to fractions and percentages and match up equivalent amounts. The students completed a Topic test on Tuesday and will now move on to ‘negative numbers’ for the remainder of the term.
Year 8 Mathematics
The Year 8 cohort have been recently exploring the use of equations. Students have developed an understanding of how to solve equations using a variety of methods and how to apply their new knowledge to identify where equations are effectively used in their lives. The Topic test has been completed and the focus has now switched to statistics and probability. Year 8 students are developing their understanding of histograms to show frequencies and working with tallies and frequency tables.
Homework tasks are set each week to consolidate understanding of learning experienced in class. These tasks are set on Hotmaths and provide immediate information for students of the concepts that require attention as they prepare for the test.
Year 9 Mathematics
Year 9 Course A students have been studying algebraic techniques. There has been a focus on the development of various strategies that can be used to factorise expressions ranging in difficulty and complexity.
Homework tasks are set each week to consolidate understanding of learning experienced in class. These tasks are set on Hotmaths and provide immediate information for students of the concepts that require attention as they prepare for the test.
Year 9 Course B students are currently developing their geometry skills by completing tasks involving angles, triangles and parallel lines. They have also recently completed an assignment on percentage change and area of squares and rectangles.
Year 10 Geometric Constructions
The Year 10’s recently made shapes that demonstrate how various measurement formulas work. One group made a right-angle triangle. They added a square on each side of the triangle and compared the size of the three squares. Another group made a trapezium and then cut it and re-joined it as a rectangle. While a third group made a parallelogram then cut it into two congruent triangles.
These students had all performed geometric reasoning. Group one had shown how Pythagoras’ Theorem works by adding the two smaller squares to make the larger square. Group two’s construction shows that the area of the trapezium formula averages one side to make a rectangle. The formula then uses the simpler area of a rectangle formula to find the area of the trapezium. Group three had demonstrated why the area of a triangle is half the area of a parallelogram.
After the activity, the students agreed that connecting the formulas with an actual object gave them a greater understanding of how they work. They reflected on how they used to think the formulas were random, but now they know that they relate to physical properties in the real world.
Year 11 Mathematics Essential: Investigation - are males better drivers?
Introduction:
In this investigation, we have been asked to Investigate the statements made by a student in a Year 12 class. Georgia The students stated that males are better drivers than females. Hollie To do this, we used the data collected from a 2013 Census at School Survey. Shenae We used the data given and applied mathematical techniques such as graphs, technology and also by calculating the mean, mode, median, range, the standard deviation and the interquartile range (upper and lower quartiles). Nevada
Hypothesis:
Males will have the faster reaction time and females will be able to concentrate for longer times. Dom
Numerical and graphical analysis:
First of all, we have to remove the Outliers in data that obviously do not belong to the set of mathematical data. Outliers removed in the Female Section on Reaction Time, 18.62 & 0.03 seconds; in the Concentration Activity for Female , 77 sec. In the Male section for Reaction Time, 2.61 seconds, and in the Concentration Activity section, no were removed. James
Using the website http://www.alcula.com/calculators/statistics/interquartile-range/ you can get the following data:
Female Reaction Times | Male Reaction Times | Female Concentration Times | Male Concentration Times |
Population size: 28 Median: 0.37 Minimum: 0.3 Maximum: 0.94 First quartile: 0.34 Third quartile: 0.4375 Interquartile Range: 0.0975 Outliers: 0.94 0.67 Andrew |
Population size: 29 Median: 0.35 Minimum: 0.14 Maximum: 0.51 First quartile: 0.31 Third quartile: 0.37 Interquartile Range: 0.06 Outliers: 0.14 0.51 Brock |
Population size: 29 Median: 41 Minimum: 30 Maximum: 64 First quartile: 35.5 Third quartile: 47.5 Interquartile Range: 12 Outliers: none Chantel |
Population size: 30 Median: 41 Minimum: 19 Maximum: 77 First quartile: 34 Third quartile: 50.5 Interquartile Range: 16.5 Outliers: 77 Rochelle |
Kate
On average males have a faster reaction time than females. The range for female reaction time is 0.64 and for males it is 0.24. On average females have a longer attention span than males by 0.83s.
Samara
In relation to concentration, females have a larger range overall however, the lower quartile, median and upper quartile are very similar. Males have a lower reaction time on average which is also supported by them having a lower number as the median.
Conclusion:
From the various measurements taken, we were able to conclude that females are better at concentrating while the males have faster reflexes. This was evident as the females often had higher results in the concentration activity whereas the males had the lower scores for reaction time. Standard deviation, mean, median, mode and range have helped in this investigation as they enabled us to see how spread out the results were and to see if that impacted the results. The graphs then help to visually compare the individual results from the data set. This investigation therefore helped to prove my hypothesis correct as it proved females had better concentration whereas the males had better reaction times. Amaris
Year 12 Financial Investigation
Year 12 Mathematics Applications students were given an opportunity to investigate about superannuation and different options on how to examine it. Students were asked to do research about different super funds available in Australia. Part of their report was to explain their options, stating the rate of the returns that they were using in their calculations, and show their calculations, if they decided to invest their super. They were also asked to show calculations on the account balance at retirement, if only the compulsory contributions were being made into the account until retirement, which is 9.5% of the employee’s salary. The consensus from the class was they were better informed on what super funds they should use when leaving school.

Mathemadness! The Great Journey In Learning Mathematics
We feel excited but also nostalgic about completing Secondary Maths. We will never forget our Maths teachers and their undeniably witty personalities – making us do more work when we said anything was easy and constantly blowing our minds when they would work out a question within two minutes. This was after it had taken us 40 minutes to solve.
Manga High will surely be an aspect of Maths that brought many memories. Versing other classmates and attempting to outsmart each other would have to be the highlight. But more than this, we will never forget the relaxing presence that Maths brought.
Teachers are always cool unless of course we get off task. Thinking back through all the Maths lessons completed over the 6 years, we realise that many of our favourite memories and friends were made here. Our favourite memories would have to be from when we would all end up singing during those Friday last period classes. Our whole class would join in screeching some absolute classics among them being; Let it go – Frozen, How Far I’ll Go – Moana, and many Queen songs. An experience that we’ll never forget, though Mr Angeles would never fail to remind us that we should study hard because we’re never going to have careers in singing!
We feel absolutely relieved that Maths is finished! Although, we don’t think we will ever escape the shadow of maths… ever! There have been many difficult challenges that we have had to overcome during our last year of studying maths. We dealt with the challenge of online learning due to the pandemic. Yet, we were able to study it just as well as being in a classroom, because of technology we now have today, and the preparation put in by all our Maths teachers. Hopefully, it all comes in handy one day.
Again, we all feel relieved to have finished Maths as we have always had to remember formulas and now that it is finished. It gives us an opportunity to think about what we should do with most of these calculations.
Finally, thank you St Joseph’s School for all the great memories. We are forever grateful.
