Gospel: 6th Sunday of Lent - Palm Sunday Year B Mark 15:1-39
Early in the morning the chief priests, the nation's leaders, and the teachers of the Law of Moses met together with the whole Jewish council. They tied up Jesus and led him off to Pilate. He asked Jesus, "Are you the king of the Jews?"
"Those are your words," Jesus answered.
The chief priests brought many charges against Jesus. Then Pilate questioned him again,
"Don't you have anything to say? Don't you hear what crimes they say you have done?"
But Jesus did not answer, and Pilate was amazed. During Passover, Pilate always freed one prisoner chosen by the people and at that time there was a prisoner named Barabbas. He and some others had been arrested for murder during a riot. The Jewish people now came and asked Pilate to set a prisoner free, just as he usually did.
Pilate asked them, "Do you want me to free the king of the Jews?"
Pilate knew that the chief priests had brought Jesus to him because they were jealous. But the chief priests told the crowd to ask Pilate to free Barabbas. Then Pilate asked the crowd,
"What do you want me to do with this man you say is the king of the Jews?"
They yelled, "Nail him to a cross!" Pilate asked, "But what crime has he done?"
"Nail him to a cross!" they yelled even louder.
Pilate wanted to please the crowd. So he set Barabbas free. Then he ordered his soldiers to beat Jesus with a whip and nail him to a cross. The soldiers led Jesus inside the courtyard of the fortress and called together the rest of the troops. They put a purple robe on him, and on his head they placed a crown that they had made out of thorn branches.
They made fun of Jesus and shouted, "Hey, you king of the Jews!"
Then they beat him on the head with a stick. They spit on him and kneeled down and pretended to worship him. When the soldiers had finished making fun of Jesus, they took off the purple robe. They put his own clothes back on him and led him off to be nailed to a cross. Simon from Cyrene happened to be coming in from a farm, and they forced him to carry Jesus' cross. Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus. The soldiers took Jesus to Golgotha, which means "Place of a Skull."
There they gave him some wine mixed with a drug to ease the pain, but he refused to drink it.
They nailed Jesus to a cross and gambled to see who would get his clothes.
It was about nine o'clock in the morning when they nailed him to the cross.
On it was a sign that told why he was nailed there. It read, "This is the King of the Jews."
The soldiers also nailed two criminals on crosses, one to the right of Jesus and the other to his left.
So the Scriptures came true which say, "He was accused of being a criminal."
People who passed by said terrible things about Jesus. They shook their heads and shouted,
"Ha! So you're the one who claimed you could tear down the temple and build it again in three days.
Save yourself and come down from the cross!"
The chief priests and the teachers of the Law of Moses also made fun of Jesus. They said to each other,
"He saved others, but he can't save himself. If he is the Messiah, the king of Israel, let him come down from the cross!
Then we will see and believe." The two criminals also said cruel things to Jesus.
About noon the sky turned dark and stayed that way until around three o'clock. Then about that time Jesus shouted,
"Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?"
which means, "My God, my God, why have you deserted me?"
Some of the people standing there heard Jesus and said, "He is calling for Elijah."
One of them ran and grabbed a sponge. After he had soaked it in wine, he put it on a stick and held it up to Jesus.
He said, "Let's wait and see if Elijah will come and take him down!"
Jesus shouted and then died.
At once the curtain in the temple tore in two from top to bottom. A Roman army officer was standing in front of Jesus.
When the officer saw how Jesus died, he said, "This man really was the Son of God!"

From the Principal's Desk
Dear Members of St Joseph’s Family,
St Joseph’s Day Mass
We were privileged on Monday to celebrate this special day in the Church’s and our School’s year with a whole School Mass conducted by Fr George. Being our School’s Patron Saint, St Joseph is an ideal role model of ‘Fidelity’. As we revisit our School Motto, we reflect on Joseph’s commitment and loyalty to his vocation in helping Mary bring up the child Jesus.
de Vialar Day
Today we celebrated our first house day for the year - de Vialar Day. We thank our Year 5 students and our Secondary de Vialar students for their presentation at the Primary and Secondary Assemblies.
Each campus was busy with its various activities and provided us with an opportunity to reflect on St Emilie de Vialar, the foundress of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition. Emilie and her Sisters were to be quiet and faithful servants in God’s plan for all peoples. They did this through their acts of charity and service. We in Northam have witnessed this service since 1889 when the Sisters first established our School. St Emilie espoused to her Sisters, “Go, and with you have do all the good you can’. And so it was for the Sisters when they arrived in Northam. We are privileged to have a history rich in the charism of St Emilie de Vialar.
Project Compassion
Our fundraising project for Term 1 is Project Compassion. Funds raised from de Vialar Day and the upcoming Secondary social will be donated to this charity. Today, Secondary students challenged each other to donate by creating money chains around our Church. Well done to the students for their generosity and ingenuity.
Herbert Edwards Cup/Muriel Shield
We thank Mr Vernede and our Years 7-9 Boys' team comprising of Shayal Goldson, Aiden O’Driscoll, Pietro Vero and Ben Vincent who represented our School this week in the Finals of the Herbert Edwards Cup. The team performed well but missed out on going through to the Grand Final by one game! Well done to the team on their achievements.
ThinkUKnow
The ‘ThinkUknow’ presentation held this week was a very informative evening focusing on what young people do online, the challenges they may face and what they can do if something goes wrong. For those unable to attend, resources, including the ‘SOS Guide to cyber safety’, are available from https://www.thinkuknow.org.au/
Secondary Interim Reports
Parents/caregivers are advised that Term 1 Interim Reports were posted home this week as well as made electronically available to parents/caregivers and students via the SEQTA portal. Families are encouraged to make a time to discuss any concerns or issues with teachers on Thursday 5 April. Information regarding the upcoming Parent/Student/Teacher interviews has been sent with the reports.
Palm Sunday
This weekend marks the start of Holy Week. Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem as we progress towards Holy Thursday and Good Friday. Our students will be participating in Stations of the Cross on Monday in preparation for the coming Easter season.
Families are reminded that School will be closed from Good Friday (30 March) to Easter Tuesday (3 April). Staff and students return on Wednesday 4 April.
God Bless

Project Compassion 2018 ~ Week 6
When Psyche Mae featured in Project Compassion 2008, she was living in a squatter settlement, on the edge of a giant rubbish dump outside Manila in the Philippines. She is now a young social worker, with plans to study a Master’s degree, whilst helping others emerge from poverty, thanks to the support of individuals and Caritas Australia.
Please donate to Project Compassion 2018 and help improve the health and wellbeing of communities in the Philippines so they can work towards eradicating poverty, providing a just future for all. You can donate through Parish boxes and envelopes, by visiting www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion or phoning 1800 024 413.

RAC Picture Book
The Royal Automobile Club of WA (Inc) has published a children’s storybook, ”My Family, The Elephant and Me” which highlights the importance of road safety and follows a Wheatbelt family on a road trip to Jurien Bay. The book was commissioned in 2015 as part of a five year road safety campaign to highlight the consistently high road toll in our region. The aim is to provide communities with lasting reminders of the simple things everyone can do to make a real difference to road safety in our community.
A copy of this book has been sent home this week with the youngest in each Primary family. We do have a number of additional copies available should any family have a student wanting their own copy - there are a few activity pages in the book that could be used on a road trip. If you have a child wanting a copy, please ask them to call in to the Primary Admin Office.
A bookmark with the Elephant image was also distributed to all students from Year 1 to Year 6 today. Secondary students will receive a bookmark early next week.
Year 3/4 Liturgy
This week, Mrs Pollard and Year 3/4 students celebrated a lovely Liturgy based on Friendship. The class was strongly supported by a number of parents and grandparents. Thank you to Fr Simeon, Mrs Johnson and Mr Reidy for assisting with the Liturgy.
NSSA Swimming Carnival
The NSSA Swimming Carnival will be held on Wednesday 28 March starting at 9.00am. Selected students from Years 4 to 6 will participate in the Carnival and have already been provided with information from Ms Carrie Frost. Good luck to all the swimmers competing on the day.
Mobile Phones & iPads
Mobile phones and iPads have become an important part of our modern lifestyle. Please remember that a student will need to seek permission from their parent/guardian to bring a mobile phone to School by completing the Mobile Phone Policy form. For Primary students, upon arrival at School the mobile phone or iPad needs to be turned off and handed to the classroom teacher. Students who are found to be using their mobile phone or personal iPad during school time will have it confiscated and taken to the Office. It can be retrieved at the end of the school day. Copies of the Mobile Phone Policy form are available from the Office for students to complete if they are to bring a mobile phone to School. If any more information is required on this, please consult the Parent Handbook.

Year 11 Food
The Year 11 Food Science and Technology class competed in the inaugural "My Signature Dish" competition. Students had to showcase a local product in a single serve meal that could be made in 50 minutes for under $6.00. A great variety of dishes were sampled by the judges; Mr Sinclair, Mrs Wright and Ms Dinneen. The winner was Noah Whiteaker showcasing Mt Barker chicken in a chicken parmigiana and steamed seasonal vegetables dish.

Biology Excursion
The Year 12 Biology ATAR class visited the LotteryWest BioDiscovery Centre at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research on Thursday. Students were able to work in a research-grade laboratory and practice common laboratory techniques, PCR and gel electrophoresis. We were able to compare the DNA of two patients with melanoma to investigate if either of the patients carried the BRAF mutation. If they do, there are specific drugs available to treat their cancer. This is just one example of the research completed at the Institute.

Chemistry Presentation
Last Thursday, four students from Year 11 and Year 12 Chemistry (Jayde Williams, Presit Kaur, Miguel Reyes and Elijah May) attended a special presentation at Curtin University coordinated by the Royal Australian Chemical Institute-WA Branch. This annual presentation is used to highlight current cutting-edge research and researchers, especially when it can value-add to the senior secondary curriculum. This year the annual Bayliss Youth Lecture was delivered by Dr Tristan Clemons.
Dr Clemons’ presentation called ‘From Trojan Horses to Pro Donkey Riding and Everything in Between: My Life as a Nanoscientist’, focused on the development of tiny nanoparticles, one thousand times smaller than the width of a human hair which are designed for applications in drug delivery in medicine for diseases such as cancer, spinal cord and burn injuries.
The talk was entertaining and highly informative. The students heard how studying advanced degrees at university does not mean putting the rest of your life on hold as they learned how Tristan balances being a research scientist, active in community service assisting remote overseas villages and being an elite sports person, as he also represents Australia as the goalkeeper with the Australian Hockey team, the Kookaburras (he is currently in training for the Commonwealth games). A very worthwhile presentation that had many interesting facets the students have taken away with them.
Synergy Schools Solar Challenge
We wish our two teams all the best in next week’s Synergy School Solar car challenge. From Year 7 we have Fred Ochtman, Clayton de Wit, Adrian Gargano and Ashton Stewart, who will be joined by a team from Year 6 consisting of Loch Mactaggart, Lachlan Willmott, Demi Collins and Lily Parker. The Heat for our region will be at Mazenod College on Tuesday 27 March and will involve around twenty schools, so a highly competitive event.
In the inaugural event last year, our Year 6 team reached the Grand Final and we look forward to updates and positive results next week. Good luck to all our squad members in this event.
Astrofest
Curtin University is holding an astronomy festival this Saturday 24 March at Curtin Stadium between 5.30pm-9.30pm. This free festival will be a fun celebration of Australian science. As well as optical and radio telescopes operating, Astrofest will feature a myriad of interesting, engaging and exciting indoor and outdoor activities for the whole family. Thanks to Celestron and Skywatcher Telescopes, there will be the chance to win one of two telescopes.
BYO picnic dinner or there will be a variety of food vendors onsite. Check astronomywa.net.au for the full program. This event is sponsored by Curtin University, AGWA, CSIRO, UWA, SciTech and the State Government.

Meeting News
Yesterday's meeting saw discussions being made for the 2018 project and this is still yet to be decided but we are eager to set a goal and work towards it for the benefit of our children and the School community.
The Athletics Carnival being held in Term 2 will see a broad range of food and drink available for students, staff and families. In the past, the P&F have held a sausage sizzle. However, with the trial of the hamburgers at the swimming carnival being a huge success, it was decided to introduce more options at the Athletics Carnival. Food such as toasted sandwiches, chicken and salad rolls, bacon and egg burgers etc will be added to the menu. We will finalise this closer to the date and inform parents on what will be available.
