Gospel: 2nd Sunday of Lent Year B Mark 9:2-10
Jesus took Peter, James, and John with him. They went up on a high mountain, where they could be alone. There in front of the disciples, Jesus was completely changed. And his clothes became much whiter than any bleach on earth could make them. Then Moses and Elijah were there talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, "Teacher, it is good for us to be here! Let us make three shelters, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." But Peter and the others were terribly frightened, and he did not know what he was talking about. The shadow of a cloud passed over and covered them. From the cloud a voice said, "This is my Son, and I love him. Listen to what he says!" At once the disciples looked around, but they saw only Jesus. As Jesus and his disciples were coming down the mountain, he told them not to say a word about what they had seen, until the Son of Man had been raised from death. So they kept it to themselves. But they wondered what he meant by the words "raised from death."

Leaders' Forum
This week I was able to attend the Leaders' Forum where Principals from all Catholic schools in Western Australia meet to hear of up-to-date developments in our sector.
Dr Debra Sayce, Acting Executive Director of CEWA, and Bishop Holohan addressed the group to reiterate the importance of Catholic Identity in our schools as our foremost mission.
The CEWA Safe Schools Framework was launched and all schools, including our school, are adopting further strategies and practices to ensure the safety of our students.
Our system-wide ICT program, Leading Lights, is progressing and already we have made changes to our financial systems. This year, we envisage changing to a new Administration system and as our staff and students have been migrated to Office 365 we are on the journey to learning new Apps, such as Teams, Cloud technology and new ways of storing and sharing data.
Year 7 Retreat
I was privileged on Tuesday to visit our Year7 students at their first Retreat. There was a buzz of enthusiasm as they worked on their personal 'Avatar' and enjoyed some team building games. I was impressed by the students' attention and interest as staff shared their personal faith journey with the group. We thank Mr Reidy for leading our students through this day.
Secondary Parents 'Meet and Greet' and Parent Night
Our P&F hosted a 'Meet and Greet' for our Years 7 and 8 parents this week as a prelude to the Parent Information session. We had a significant number of parents attend the evening and consider it a success and worthwhile event. We thank the P&F for this initiative which made it possible to welcome many parents and add to the sense of community on our Secondary campus. We thank the parents for attending this evening and Mrs Doughty for leading the evening's information session.

Annual School Improvement Plan
For parents who were unable to attend the various parent evenings this term, please access our 2018 Annual School Improvement Plan and our 2017-2021 Strategic Plan from our website. Copies are available upon request from our Administration Office.
School Swimming Carnival
Our Inter-house Swimming Carnival will be held next Thursday 1 March at 4.00pm at the Northam Pool. We are looking forward to a wonderful competitive evening and our P&F Association will be there in full support providing food and refreshments for purchase by our families. Please refer to the information from Ms Frost in this newsletter. We look forward to having you join us for the afternoon.
Student Free Day
Parents are reminded that Friday 2 March is a student free day for our students. Our staff will be attending professional development on that day. As part of our evangelisation theme of Fidelity, staff will spend the day engaging with our school motto and our dual Charisms from the Sisters of St Joseph of the Apparition and the Marists.
God Bless

Our Students
School Uniform
At the start of every year, students are expected to wear the School Uniform in a well-presented manner, at all times! As a School, we encourage students to feel especially proud by wearing the school uniform correctly and in a manner that shows school pride. Please refer to the Parent Handbook for any information regarding uniforms. The Uniform Shop opening times are listed at the back of the newsletter.
Parents On Campus
All parents and visitors must sign in at the Office before engaging in any activity or if a student is picked up or dropped off outside normal school times. Parents are requested to arrive no earlier than 3.00pm [Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays] or 2.25pm [Thursdays] when collecting a student at the end of the day. Similarly, parents are expected to depart the school grounds in the morning at the ringing of the bell or when the siren goes. It can be disconcerting to a child adjusting to the new routine if they can hear their parents chatting outside their classroom.
Absentee Procedure
With many new students, there may be parents who are unfamiliar with our absentee procedure, namely, you must call the Primary or Secondary office prior to 9.00am on the day to notify us of your child’s absence, otherwise you will receive a text message from the School advising of an unexplained absence. Our telephone system allows parents the opportunity to call and leave messages outside of normal office hours, if this is more convenient. Alternately, you may send an email message to our new email address: absentee@sjsnortham.wa.edu.au to notify of an absence. This email will then take the place of written notification.
Communication
If you would like to contact the School or an individual teacher, please ring the Office at either campus to arrange an appointment with the person you would like to see. The School Diary is also another means of communication for students from Years 3 to 12 and should be used to record homework and brought home every day. Parents are encouraged to check the Diary daily. Students in the younger years will be using a Communication Book which will have letters and/or notes from teachers stuck in. As with the Diary, parents should refer to this Book daily and can use this as a means to notify their child’s teacher of any concerns or absences.

Primary Interm Swimming Lessons
Parents are advised that Interm swimming lessons continue next week. As St Joseph’s School will be closed on Friday 2 March for a staff Professional Development day, the final day for swimming lessons will be Thursday 1 March. Please also note that students with a medical condition must carry their medication with them to each lesson. Students will be required to bring sunscreen, bathers, a towel and thongs for each lesson plus a change of underwear and a plastic bag for wet clothing to go home in.
Rebecca Clarke Head of Primary
SEQTA Access
If any parent has not yet accessed SEQTA via an email, please ring the Head of Secondary on 9621 3536. Parent/guardian emails provided to the School will be checked to ensure it is correct before activating in SEQTA. Once the email has been approved, you should be ready to activate the account within 24 hours.
Prison Adventure
I was privileged to attend the Year 9 excursion to Fremantle prison. It was really interesting and our students were an outstanding group of young people. Ciccerello’s was a special treat for the day and many students took advantage of the ‘fish’ menu. Thank you to Mr Bogoni and Ms Enright for the smooth operation and organisation of the day.
eBooks and iPads
Any students still having trouble accessing either or both of these tools, should see their teachers immediately for help. We do not want any students without access to their texts.
School Based Immunisation Program ~ Years 8 and 10
The Department of Health is offering a free immunisation for Year 8 students in 2018. It is a booster dose for diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough (dTpa) vaccine and a vaccine against human papillomavirus (HPV). All students will receive an information pack and parents must sign and return the consent form for their children to participate in the vaccinations occurring on 11 April.
A free, one dose, Meningococcal ACWY immunisation for Year 10 students in 2018. Students will receive an information pack and these vaccinations will also occur on April 11. All students will receive an information pack and parents must sign and return the consent form for their children to participate. For more information, please visit: healthywa.wa.gov.au/immunisation
Homework Classes
Homework classes commenced this week on Tuesday from 3:15pm-4:15pm. Students who wish to attend these classes must have their parents/guardians complete the Permission form before they can attend these classes. These forms are available from the Secondary Admin Office.
Student Success
St Joseph’s School has its own Hockey Star. Year 11 student, Karri Roebourne, has been invited to represent Australia in Japan this year. Karri was selected to play for the NSW Bush Rangers Under 16s team this April. The Bush Rangers team is a selection of the best young hockey players in Australia. Karri will be given the opportunity to experience elite training and competitions, and will also experience all the sights Japan has to offer. St Joseph’s School community is very proud of Karri’s achievements and we wish her all the best as she develops her hockey skills.

Year 12 ATAR Tutorials 2018
After-school tutorials for Year 12 ATAR students have been established to allow students with specific questions and Learning Area subject issues to have an opportunity to have an intensive time with their course teacher to revisit and explore topics previously covered.
Students attending these sessions are encouraged to bring all relevant materials for that subject to that tutorial. The classes will commence at the Secondary Campus (room to be determined by the individual course teacher) at 3.20pm and will conclude no later than 5.00pm.

Secondary Food News
We are cooking up a storm in the Food Room. We are focusing on adding extra “hidden” vegetables to our meals. Year 8's have made Mac n cheese (with zucchini and tomato), Year 9's bacon and egg pie (tomato and spinach), Year 10's thai beef salad and the Year 11's compared a processed frozen salad to a fresh raw one: chicken, spinach and ricotta pasta.

2018 Inter-house Swimming Carnival
Parents and caregivers are advised that the 2018 Inter-house Swimming Carnival for students in Years 4 to 12 will be held on Thursday 1 March. Please note the following arrangements and suggestions for this year’s carnival.
This is an official school event and therefore attendance is required for all students in Years 4 to 12. A student who is unable to attend, must provide a note to the class teacher. All students are to remain in their House bay for the duration of the Carnival.
Students are required to be at the pool by 3.40pm. Free entry to the pool for students will be via the vehicle entry gate where they will have their name marked off the Roll. All parents and spectators are to enter by the main gate at normal entry fee. Parent/spectator seating is on the opposite side to students or in designated areas only. Students will not be permitted to visit parents in the spectator area.
The first event starts at 4.00pm. The across-the-pool 20m events will be completed at the beginning of the program and it is expected the carnival should finish approximately between 7.30-8.00pm.
Students are to wear their sports uniform and House coloured top. Students are not permitted to colour their hair or paint their bodies. Girls are to wear one-piece bathers and not bikinis or two-piece outfits.
Students are required to eat in their House bay. A sausage sizzle and hamburgers will be on sale by the P&F. Tea, coffee and soft-drinks will also be available to purchase.
Due to electrical wiring required for computer recording and lighting, parents are advised that toddlers and students will not have access to the wading pools. Northam Shire regulations do not allow balloons and streamers within the pool area.
PLEASE NOTE: We are using a new computer program for the first time at this carnival. We ask that you be patient as we learn how to use it. If problems arise, we will deal with it the best we can and we ask for your understanding on this matter.
As well as a swimming competition, the Carnival is about participation and teamwork. Please emphasise that all who compete at their best are, in the end, winners. The staff and students look forward to your support on the night.
Carrie Frost & Adrienne Suckling Sport Coordinators
Our Faith
Year 7 Retreat
On Tuesday our Year 7 students participated in their Retreat day at the Church and Parish Hall. The students enjoyed a day of prayer and reflection on their emotional and spiritual state. Commitments to the service of others were made and special significance was placed on understanding the identity and significance of their House groups. We thank the House Captains and special guests Mrs Rebecca Doughty and Mr Luke Bogoni for their insights into how to be a person for others.

Project Compassion 2018 ~ Week 2
Rattanak is a skilled young barber, living an independent life in rural Cambodia. But it wasn’t always that way. As a child he contracted polio and also became deaf. Like many people who are deaf or hard of hearing, Rattanak faced isolation, with a lack of opportunity to escape poverty. After joining the Deaf Development Program run by Caritas Australia’s partner, Maryknoll Cambodia, his life was transformed and he is now supporting himself, his wife and baby.
Please donate to Project Compassion 2018 and help deaf youth in Cambodia to build a just future and live in communities that uphold everyone’s dignity. A Just Future starts with your support! You can donate through Parish boxes and envelopes, by visiting www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion or phoning 1800 024 413. Lloyd Reidy Religious Education Coordinator
